A letter from a student

By  JOHN MAVERICK GALANG

One of the greatest legacies that we can leave ourselves is the opportunity for a first-class education. As students, we aspire to have every chance to fulfill our hopes and dreams, to provide the tools we need to succeed in the competitive global economy. That’s why I am so deeply disturbed about this rumor about the University’s Budget Cut.

We go to school everyday to learn, not to undermine the quality of education that we receive, but jeopardize our very access to education.

The path to a bright, thriving future begins right at the doorsteps of our colleges and universities. I would not have been possible to graduate in high school without my parents were it not for the Tuition Aid Grant that I received from them. These harmful cuts to our colleges and universities are very personal to me, as they are to the thousands of middle-class residents who have benefited from the first-rate education they received at those schools.

As a student, I have become even more determined to keep alive the promise of a quality higher education for everyone here in RSU (Odiongan) who desires one. I am also acutely aware of the challenge to keep it affordable. Doing so takes vision, leadership and a true commitment in helping our young people to succeed — not arbitrary decisions that could block our path to success.

In an increasingly competitive world market, we cannot afford to lose its edge. And with so many young people poised for a promising future, we cannot afford to let them (us) down. Let’s continue doing our very best to cut spending waste and reform state government, but let’s not do it on our own backs.
